HANNOVERSCHE ALLGEMEINE ZEITUNG

Steppen ohne Ende

Damien and Bernadette‘s wedding on 28th December 2005

Hi everybody!
This is a article from the "Nenagh Guardian Newspaper" published today, about the Bernadette‘s wedding on 28th December 2005, with interviews and very interesting things about her wedding in Nenagh and in the Dromoland castle with for example a spectacular fireworks in the evening, and there‘s also something about her honeymoon which is a surprise from Damien, and Bernadette also talks about her future in the show and in her life.
I hope you will be happy to read this long article about this big event for Bernadette and Damien.

Champion dancer Bernadette on surprise honeymoon

By Peter Gleeson

Nenagh‘s six times World Champion dancer Bernadette Flynn is being treated to a surprise exotic honeymoon by her husband, Damien O‘Kane.
The bride didn‘t have a clue where she was heading when the couple arrived at Dublin Airport last Sunday to jet off on a two and a half week romantic break following their memorable wedding in Nenagh.
Speaking on the eve of her departure from her home town that she loves so well, the leading lady of Michael Flatley‘s Lord of the Dance spectacular, revealed: "All I know is that I am being taken by Damien to Dublin Airport. I don‘t have a clue where we are going to. It‘s going to be a big surprise."
Bernadette (26) tied the nuptial knot with Co Derry born Damien, a leading male star in Lord of the Dance, in St Mary‘s of the Rosary Church on December 28 in front of 250 invited guests and a throng of onlookers.
"She always wanted to come back to Nenagh to get married among her friends and the people she grew up with," said her mother, Mary.
The couple were married by Fr Willie Teehan, CC, assisted by Fr Dan Fitzgerald, CC, friends of the Flynn family. Bridesmaids were Bernadette‘s three sisters, Elaine and twins, Caitriona and Maria. In a ceremony with beautiful song and music, the bride was given away by her father, Andy.
The reception was held later in the lavish Dromoland Castle outside Ennis where one of the highlights was a spectacular late night fireworks display.
"The wedding day was absolutely unbelievable," recalled a delighted Bernadette. "The weather could not have been better; we were so lucky to have a summer‘s day in the middle of December."
Bernadette — who danced alongside Flatley for four years as one of the lead ladies in his famous show up to his retirement — plans to eventually settle down close to the shores of Lough Derg at Youghal, outside Nenagh.
The happy couple are currently putting the final touches to a beautiful house they are building on a hill overlooking the majestic lake. "We are nearly there with the house. I‘d say it will take another three to four months before everything is ready," Bernadette revealed.
On return from their honeymoon the couple will again join the Lord of the Dance troupe for a prolonged series of performances throughout the UK. After that the future is unclear.
"We have both been dancing with the show for ten years, so we have to look at how we are going to spend the rest of our lives," says Bernadette.
They intend moving into their new house once it is completed and using it as their base. The couple still plan to perform, but a different future is on the cards in the medium term.
Said Bernadette: "It will be great to be back close to home after so many years away performing. Youghal is such a lovely place".
"We have to look to the future and think about getting jobs for ourselves and I‘m sure we will teach dancing and continue to do a few gigs around ourselves.
"We have no set date for our retirement. We will stay going as long as long as we can, because it‘s such a hard thing to leave the stage after so many years performing. It‘s like a bug; you do not want to let it go."
Bernadette proved a sensation when Flatley personally chose her to one of his leading ladies in the inaugural run of his famous show a decade ago. It took a brave decision for her parents Andy and Mary, pub and guesthouse owners in Sarsfield Street, to allow her quit school in Transition Year in St Mary‘s Secondary School to join the show.
But their judgement proved right, with Bernadette dancing in countries all over the world in front of packed audiences. Now she — and Damien too — are still very much in demand both as performers and as dance teachers with very bright futures.

No, no way... I´m staying wiht LOtD, I´m definitely a Lord Girl!"

Hochzeit? Am 28. Dezember in Nenagh - Bernie dazu: "If I had my way, I´d love about 100 guests but in this business, you meet many close friends, so the number will be around 250ish!"

Kinder? "No, definitely, not. I´ve got three nehews an thatßs plenty, so no plans, definitley not." *g* )

Die Show verlassen? IDM schreibt: "She has no thoughts to leave the show before the summer of next year" - okay, also auf keinen Fall vor Sommer 2006.

die Tanzschuhe an den Nagel hängen? Bernie: "Oh no, don´t ask that. Ißm never goint to sop dancing; I don´t think I could ever acually not dance. ... I´d even like to do other dance, like Salsa, as a hobby..."

"You could get me into a ot of trouble, you didnt even ask me that question!" Michael for two years and then six with Damien, is it makedly differnt? "Yeah, I completly donßt know how to answer this. It´s good fun with Damien but its been one of the most amaing expericens so share the stage with MF. ... Nobody will eer have the ssame charisma as Michael; he´s got something really special.I don´t know how to explain it. He´s unbelievalbe, he really is."
